Comfort & Rest for the Journey

At the end of life’s journey, hospice care can bring comfort and the opportunity for sharing and spiritual growth. Because this special type of care can mean so much to patients, families and caregivers, Buckner Retirement Services has added Buckner Hospice in Austin and Buckner Hospice Houston to our continuum of care. Our not-for profit hospice programs are certified by Medicare and licensed by the state of Texas*. Here’s a closer look.

Comfort as the journey ends: “Hospice" is the term for a special program of care for people whose life expectancy is six months or less. Instead of trying to cure an illness, Buckner Hospice in Austin and Buckner Hospice Houston focus on making the patient comfortable, easing pain and other symptoms, and supporting the family through a challenging time. Our goal is to help patients live their remaining days to the fullest— with purpose, dignity, grace and support.

Care where it’s needed most: Hospice is more a concept of care than a specific place. Buckner Hospice in Austin serves patients in private homes, nursing homes, assisted living communities and personal care homes in Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, Burnet, Blanco, Hays, Lee and Llano Counties. Buckner Hospice Houston serves patients in private homes, nursing homes, assisted living communities and personal care homes in Harris, Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Walker, Waller, and Wharton Counties. A compassionate, specially trained team: Buckner Hospice in Austin and Buckner Hospice Houston caregivers are specially trained professionals who understand the unique goals of hospice care. The team is interdisciplinary—including doctors, nurses, social workers, dieticians, aides, spiritual care and volunteers—and structured to meet each patient’s specific needs.

Customized services and support:
Because we know that each person’s end-of-life experience is different, our hospice team works with the patient, physician and family to create a customized plan of care. This plan guides all of our services as we work together to meet the patient’s special needs and wishes. Team members help patients be as free of pain as possible and at peace with themselves and their illness. They also provide support, education and counseling to family members, staff and other residents who know and care about the patient.

Buckner's Hospice Services in Austin and Houston include:

• Coordination of services and care with the patient's family doctor
• Dietician services
• Expert management of physical symptoms
• Around-the-clock nursing services above and beyond the usual nursing home care
• Training of family members in patient care as appropriate
• Spiritual and emotional support for patient and the family
• Help with practical matters associated with terminal illness
• Speech, occupational and physical therapies when considered useful by the hospice team
• Bereavement and support groups for families

Paying for Hospice Services: Medicare and most private insurance plans cover hospice services based on certain eligibility requirements. Buckner Hospice in Austin and Buckner Hospice Houston care managers help patients and families coordinate benefits and reimbursement to ensure access to hospice care.
