Governor appoints Mazzara

Ben C. Mazzara, executive director of Calder Woods, is a mover and shaker in the retirement industry.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has reappointed Mazzara to a new six-year term on the Nursing Facility Administrators Advisory Committee. The committee advises the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services on licensing and regulation of nursing facility administrators.

“I was flattered to be asked to serve again on this important committee to enhance the lives of residents throughout the state,” he said.

Mazzara, who came to Calder Woods in October 2007, is a licensed nursing administrator. He is a past board member of the Texas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (TAHSA) and the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. (AAHSA)

In April, he went to Washington, D.C., as part of an AAHSA delegation of retirement industry leaders. He was one of only 30 selected to participate. They met with congressional representatives to discuss health care reform at the U.S. Capitol.

Mazzara considers his responsibilities more than just a job.

“It’s a ministry,” he said. “It’s all about our residents, their families and the dedicated staff members.”

Charlie Wilson, vice president of operations for Buckner Retirement Services, said Ben is a proven leader.

“Ben is committed to enhancing the lives of older adults,” he said. “He has an astute business mind, a lot of energy, and a big heart.”
